How To Manage Distractions
Having your own business is such a great feeling! The freedom of on your own business from home or an office is wonderful. These are just a few of the perks of being an Entrepreneur.
While being self-employed has the perk of freedom to work from home, office or your car. It also has its draw backs as well. One of the problems many self-employed face is distractions. Distractions of any type will decrease productivity and affect your cash flow.
What are some distractions you may encounter? If you work from home, some home based business owner’s start focusing on house chores more than working on their business. Instead of making those cold calls or warm calls, you start folding clothes, cleaning closets, anything to not make those calls. Or maybe you have little ones who keep you distracted. How about going out to lunch with a family member or friend? Lunch then leads to stopping at the mall or doing something other than working on your marketing plan, or product offer.
Some days you start to procrastinate and can’t seem to focus. Maybe you need to go check on your elderly family member. All in all you start justifying being away from your business just for a few minutes per day. Those minutes start to add up to hours, and then when you realize you spent 1 or 2 days a week doing nothing to help you grow your business.
How can you manage your time better and manage those un-needed distractions. Here are a few of my ideas. Believe me I know about distractions. I have family who will call me in the middle of my work day to gossip. Therefore, I refuse to answer the phone until the end of my day.
1. Tell your family members what your working hours are. 6 am- 6pm Monday through Friday.
2. If you have children who need care, then enroll them in daycare while you are at work. One mistake many female entrepreneurs make is trying to still care for their children and house hold full-time while trying to work from home on their business. Not going to work. You need to focus on one or the other not both. Having an assistant can help you manage the needs of your family and your business.
3. Make a monthly plan of action, then a weekly plan of attack, and last break those tasks down to daily tasks.
4. If you can, move your home office to a room away from family, TV or other distractions. It this is impossible try working at a library, rent a office space for the day or work at a coffee shop.
5. Reward yourself for keeping on track and sticking to your plan. I love my Tuesday and Thursday night TV shows. Therefore, I know to do more work on Monday and everyday during the day so I can watch my shows without feeling guilty.
6. Schedule 15 minute breaks in the morning and afternoons. Allow 30-45 minutes for lunch and to take a break. Go for a walk, rest or read non-work related materials.
7. Last, If you have to, work late nights after others have gone to bed and early mornings before your spouse or children start to get up.
The key to managing distractions is Discipline, and Staying Focused! You won’t enjoy the perks of being self-employed if you can’t build a successful business.
