What Do You Mean By Carotid Artery Bypass Surgery?

If your doctor informs you that your coronary arteries (these are such arteries which helps in flowing of blood to heart) are blocked severely then you may have to undergo carotid artery bypass surgery. This is also termed as coronary artery bypass grafting. The surgery helps in diverting the flow of blood around the section of diseased or blocked artery. Millions of operation carotid artery bypass surgery is done throughout the year. This condition appears in patient heart when fatty materials known as plague find themselves cozy inside artery. Arthrosclerosis is the medical term which is used for such condition. There are people who die due to stroke; one of the reasons is the plague which is present inside artery cracks down.

Carotid artery bypass surgery is considered a major operation where the surgeon tries a incision in the breastbone, which is also known as sternum, tries spreading the cage and prevents the working of the heart and the doctor uses a machine to promote the circulation of blood during operation.

During carotid artery bypass surgery, the doctor at times may remove a long vein, this vein is generally taken from leg and it is used as bypass graft. It is the aorta (this is actually the large artery which leaves the heart) where this leg vein is grafted. The other end of this long leg vein is connected to coronary artery after the blockage has been removed. There is an alternate solution to it is the detachment of the internal mammary arteries from the wall of the chest and attach all the ends which are open directly to coronary artery that is downstream of blockage.

Recovery from this bypass surgery depends on many things like the kind of surgery done,  the physical condition of the patient which is seen before the surgery takes place, how well the patient follows the recommendation of the doctor post surgery. This is true that a well planned time table might help you to recover in a faster pace but there is actually no proper scheduler for any patient to recover from the huge surgery.

After the completion of such a major operation a patient might get swollen legs. The reason of this swollen leg is that post surgery it has been noticed that the flow of blood slows down and hence there are fluids which gets accumulated in knee and ankle. The swollen leg is a condition which is irritating.

Carotid artery bypass surgery is indeed a major an operation and is very risky but today people do survive after the surgery and eventually various techniques are being adopted by the doctors to make it patient friendly.
